In addition, he is the creator of the Ayna Sonnet, a fourteen-line poem with fourteen letters per line. Mr. Rajub Bhowmik is a guy of many skills, holding positions as a police sergeant, an amazing author, a dedicated educator, and an actor. But above all things, he is profoundly altering South East Asian culture.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5354197800234552489.post-54361582443483719662018-09-11T08:04:00.000-07:002018-09-11T12:01:08.439-07:00A Secret Society, A New Book, Poetry! Oh My!

Yes. I know. It has been a LONG time. My apologies. Life has a way of chewing us up and spitting us out. In the last...year plus...I have written more than 400 poems which can be found on my Instagram as well as completed a novel.

If you have followed me much you also know I have been in 2 films, having taken a leap into the world of acting - which came with about 6 semesters of training. I love it. But I still love writing more and will never give it up.

But that leads me to the cool news that Hundred Heartbreaks of Harlan Halifax is now available for pre-order (hits the Kindle and shelves on 9-13-2018). I am making the blog circuit to drum up interest and am also dusting off this corner of my life. So hopefully I will be a bit more consistent here.

Oh... and my collected book of poems (the first of four) is available for pre-order too. Busy times my friends!

Here is Hundred Heartbreaks of Harlan Halifax's summary and cover, if you want a free chapter click this free ebook chapter of Hundred Heartbreaks of Harlan Halifax. BUT please keep reading this blog down below as I have two more announcements including...a secret!

The Hundred Heartbreaks of Harlan Halifax is set in the cornfields of Trinity, Indiana. The small community is verily owned by the ancient and reclusive Harlan Halifax. In the shadow of the Halifax mansion, lives young Addison Yates.

With his mother recently deceased, and a father who is on the ropes financially, Addison's world consists of his friends and an aging farmhand who now resides at the Yates' home. After an unfortunate lapse in judgment, Addison's path crosses with that of Harlan Halifax. He learns how the other half lives as well as the secrets behind Harlan's desire to remain a shut-in.

Through Harlan, Addison meets a girl from Afghanistan who is a refugee of the war-torn country. Captivated by a pair of brown eyes under a hijab, Addison is thrust on an inward journey that causes the small events in Trinity to take on much larger significance.

In this coming-of-age tale, the desperation of poverty meets the legacy of wealth. Youth clashes with age. Knowledge battles ignorance. Friendships attempt to withstand abuse, prejudice, and loss.

In a world ripping at the seams, Addison learns of love's many forms, while also awakening to the hatred that ignorance can breed.
The book has more than 100 poems and 100 pieces of art - so it makes a nice addition to those word lovers out there. At the very least, the cover is pretty neat.

Social media has been a godsend for those of us in the book-making community, much as it has been for the rest of the business world.

The obvious benefits of social media for an author are:

Relationship building

Free advertising

A World Without Borders

Unlimited access to going through the same trials and tribulations

I have often linked posts to my Facebook or Twitter accounts because those seemed, to me, to have the most recognizable benefits from an advertising perspective. What many writers, and business people in general, fail to recognize is that the best form of advertising is relationship building, connecting with your audience, and actually getting to know one another.

When your audience cares about you, who you are as a person, they are much more likely to be interested in whatever it is you do - and if you are a writer - they will be that much more interested in your novel and that much more likely to pick it up or purchase it.

To that end, Instagram and Snapchat are perfect windows into your life. They say a picture tells a thousand words. So from that logic one photo on these accounts is saying about 8 times as much as a Twitter character count. While Facebook allows users to share posts up to 63,206 characters, most of that will be hidden unless you click to open more, and let us be honest, with Facebook's terrible algorithms there is a good chance that most of your audience will never see it anyway. One way to increase the amount of people who might be able to see it?

Include a picture.

So, if pictures are still king when it comes to communicating, Instagram and Snapchat should be leveraged. I know, I know:

But I am a writer - how do words apply for a person like me?

Listen up you clod.

You can take pictures of your words. Or books. There are entire communities of people on Instagram that search for pictures of words, poetry, quotes, books. These communities are using relevant hashtags in order to find the items they want, hashtags like (and I didn't use commas so you can cut and paste these hashtags for writing and reading straight into your posts):

#writers #readers #bookstagram #writerscommunity #poets #quoteoftheday #writersofig #poetsofig #igreads #poetrycommunity #author #poem #qotd #prose #booklove #yalit #booknerd #wordporn

That is just a few! Also, they are the most popular hashtags for writers and the most popular hashtags for readers. For an example check this out at my Instagram:

I literally wrote something I thought up, on a coffee stained napkin. No one cares. They care about the words. Those are the type of people you want to attract, become friends with, and ultimatly -hopefully - convert to readers.

Now Snapchat is a little more difficult. This community is developed purely by people who are interested in looking into your life. My best advice for this is the following:

Be yourself

Do not be all business, let them see your day to day

Use the video feature, people want to hear your voice

Do NOT make massive stories. People will get bored (no one's life is that interesting that we need a 100-photo flip book). Or worse, people will unfollow -which in case you missed the point of this blog, is completely counterproductive. Five photos and videos a day should be your max.

What is great about this forum is that Snapchat has enabled users to simply scan a user's photo in order to add them. My Snapchat @ndenmon looks like this (sorry for the growl I was pretending to be Sirius Black from Harry Potter when he was in the newspaper as a wanted murder:

Oh, and in case you were wondering what Sirius Black looked like - it was this photo from the movie. Let me know what you think of my impression - but only let me know by Snap-chatting me. See what I did there?
As promised, I have accumulated the top 5 questions from my valued readers. In the "Ask Me Anything" challenge, some of you came up with really interesting questions that made me blush. I am happy to say, those are not in the top 5 most asked questions, so I dodged a bullet. That is the number 1 reason I issue the challenge, then give a quick turn around on the time frame.

I limit your ability to organize! It's a self-preservation thing.

Without further ado, here are the questions and answers in order of least to most asked.

5) When did you first become fascinated by the mafia? This question was first asked by a lady from Oklahoma, and then we had several more issue a variation of the same question from Oregon, Mississippi, and New Zealand.

I first became fascinated by the mafia through movies and family stories. My family is from the New York area with historical roots in Palermo, Sicily. There are no shortages of tales about run-ins with mafia members, friends who were "hit", and guys who knew guys. I remember being fairly young, maybe twelve or so, and watching Goodfellas and The Godfather. I couldn't help but root for the anti-heroes. From there, it was as if some part of my Italian heritage identified with the more normal aspects of the families in those movies. The big family, the pasta dinners, the music, it all felt familiar but with this shroud of secrecy and tension that made those normal events seem more interesting. I was hooked.

4) You often talk about The London Book Fair. As an author, what happens there and is it that valuable, did you go this year, and will you go next year? This question was issued in three parts from a few different people. The cities that combine to make this question are New York, Oxford, Boise, Chattanooga, Tampa, and Cardiff.

Yes I have gone to the London Book Fair several years in a row. It is a great place to go and to meet people in the industry. They have stations set up where you can gather information about every aspect of writing and publishing. Usually, I mingle with a few clients from my publishing business, Pubshelf while my counterpart, Thomas Humphreys makes new contacts and does the handshaking and kissing of babies.

I really enjoy it because London is such a nice city and the hotels are lovely, not to mention you can make so many connections. This year the hotel of choice was Kensington Close Hotel and Spa. I holed up with the fine people of Peracto Prepress there for about five days, going through all the "ins and outs" of, well you name it. You literally lock the doors, order room service, and get down to business. We did manage to escape the expo and the hotel long enough to explore the Westfield Mall in London, where one of the editors literally bought 1.5 kilograms or 3 lbs of a variety of nuts! No lie.
3) Favorite author and why? This question came from all over. Eleven different cities asked this question, so I will just list the first one as a shoutout. Christy Lawson got the question in first, out of Tennessee.

I actually have so many favorite authors but there are a few that I remember as most significant. J.R.R. Tolkien was the first author to really capture my imagination, followed by R.A. Salvatore, C.S. Lewis, and most recently G.R.R. Martin. The world crafting is something that I admire. Outside of fantasy fiction, Dennis Lehane is one of my favorites for gritty crime fiction as well as Michael Connelly.

Author Michael Connelly and Author Nicholas Denmon

2) What is my favorite meal? I should have known this would be asked a lot with all the "food porn" that I post. I am fairly simple as a meat and potato guy. A nice filet mignon with maybe a few grilled shrimp, some broccoli, and garlic mashed potatoes really makes a perfect meal. Put a scotch or a glass of Malbec next to it and you have a happy man.
1) When is Ashes to Ashes coming out? I hear you. It has been forever. I promise it is closer than you think. Hey, I even have the artwork done. I am putting out The Hundred Heartbreaks of Harlan Halifax, and then soon after Ashes to Ashes will be out. Tentatively? I think August is realistic.
It is that time of year again. I am doing the Relay for Life tonight and can use any support that the Denmonites can offer. Whether or not it is merely sharing the link below, or if it is donating some of your hard earned money for a great cause, I thank you.

We all know of a loved one that has succumbed to cancer, and this is our way to punch cancer right in the mouth, where it hurts. We hit the track tonight at 6pm EST and every dollar counts.

What is Relay?

In May 1985, Dr. Gordy Klatt walked and ran for 24 hours around a track in Tacoma, Washington, ultimately raising $27,000 to help the American Cancer Society fight the nation’s biggest health concern cancer. A year later, 340 supporters joined the overnight event. Since those first steps, the Relay For Life movement has grown into a worldwide phenomenon, raising nearly $5 billion to fight cancer.

What We Do:

Organized, overnight community fundraising walk

Teams of people camp out around a track

Members of each team take turns walking around the track

Food, games and activities provide entertainment and build camaraderie

Family-friendly environment for the entire community

How Can I Donate?

Simple! Just cut and paste the link below or click here.
My buddy Joseph Grant recently had a piece, Face of War, published in Writing Raw. In thirteen pages, Grant is able to take the reader through the mind's-eye of a soldier wounded in battle. Many pieces of literature have revolved around this familiar subject matter, but Joseph Grant takes the idea and brings a very unexpected twist.

Suffice it to say, the short story will have you searching your own face in the mirror. You'll wonder how people are able to overcome the mental trauma of losing themselves when the most crucial elements with which they associate their identity, are taken away.

It's been said, that in war, you never hear the shot that kills you. But you never hear the one that almost kills you, either. Nor do you hear the roadside bomb called an IED for Improvised Explosive Device when it goes off nearly dead center beneath your supply truck. But if you are somehow fortunate to wake up in a hospital afterwards, you will hear the ringing in your ears for weeks. The screaming of the dying soldiers around you never quite goes away.
"You're one of the lucky ones." is what they tell as you lay in the hospital bed but you don't consider yourself lucky at all. You feel like hell as your body fights to stay alive, fluids oozing through gauze everywhere. The bed is a mess and they have rounds where they pick you up as you scream in pain so that they can change the bed, change the tubes and the dressings, put you back together again before the morphine kicks in again. No, you don't consider yourself lucky. You're pieces of your former self. The lucky ones have all died, for they no longer have to live with the memory of war.

...and off to the editor!

As I announced on my Facebook page, I have recently finished my third novel The Hundred Heartbreaks of Harlan Halifax. I have occasionally dropped snippets of the novel on my page as well, but thought it might be a good idea to share the "book jacket" synopsis with all of you while it rolls onward to the editor.

I know many of you are awaiting the third book in my mafia trilogy, An Upstate New York Mafia Tale, and please know that Ashes to Ashes is well on the way to being completed. I needed a break from the storyline of AUNYMT to try my hand at a different theme and at a different style. I have many stories kicking around in this rust-bucket head of mine, and I know that with the adventure of The Hundred Heartbreaks of Harlan Halifax behind me, I will approach the ending to the trilogy with the vigor that you all deserve.

The Back of the Book:

The Hundred Heartbreaks of Harlan Halifax is a story set in the cornfields of Indiana. In Trinity, Indiana, a small community that is practically owned by the ancient and reclusive Harlan Halifax, young Addison Yates lives in the shadow of the Halifax mansion.

Through Harlan, Addison meets a girl from Afghanistan who is a refugee of the war torn country. Captivated by a pair of brown eyes under a hijab, Addison is thrust on an inward journey that causes the small events in Trinity to take on a much larger significance.

In this coming of age tale, the desperation of poverty meets the legacy of wealth. Youth clashes with age. Knowledge battles ignorance. Friendships attempt to withstand abuse, prejudice, and loss.

In a world ripping at the seams, Addison learns of love's many forms, while also awakening to the hatred that ignorance can breed.

Quote From the Book:

"On a dust covered road with his light-blue Univega Gran Rally laying on its side and dirt clinging under his fingernails he saw her part two stalks of corn like Moses parting the sea. Her dark eyes, chestnut skin, and long amber hair made the rest of the world seem all the more grey and bland. Yet he understood, now, why the sun bothered to shine at all, why birds sang, and flowers bloomed. The eyes, he remembered the eyes from Harlan’s house, from walks to town and back. Only he had never seen them before without the headscarf that made her so foreign to the rest of Trinity and made her an oddity prone to ridicule in the sleepy and eternally preserved town."
Allison Christie, a Twitter connection of mine, has long been trumpeting the independent author horn as loud and often as she is able. She has read and reviewed countless writers over the last few years and that is why I was happy to hear that she was jumping into writing her own story.

Her debut offering has received eight reviews of 5 stars and I have a feeling she is just getting started.

It is with great pleasure that I spotlight her here:
Set in the fictitious British seaside town of Humburley, Abigail Milan, now 86, regales her home health aide with her younger self’s story of how she meets her first love, Allen Marco Eaton. After posting earlier in the day about how I did most of my shopping online this year, and how nice it was to avoid the mall so far this holiday season, I was immediately turned into a hypocrite by the convening of The Council of Denmon Men.

Each year the men in the family pick a night to go forth and buy presents, unencumbered by the various females that are in the lives of the Denmon Men. This year we broke that rule, somewhat, to meet my uncle's lady friend, and seeing as how they came from New York for the occasion, it was the least we could do.

As is the tradition, and purely because it is tradition, we met for the customary beverage of The Council of Denmon Men -- namely anything with alcohol in it.
Afterwards, we contemplated lining up at the Frozen grotto so my uncle could take a picture. But then he admitted he hasn't even seen the movie and the only bit he knows is "Do you want to build a snowman?" We ultimately nixed the idea and moved onward with our journey.
UPDATE:

Many of you have been emailing me receipts for donations to St. Jude and All Childrens. I can't thank you enough for your generosity. I have 37 books to give out so far this year, and I would love if we could make it over 50.

37 books that I have to give out means a minimum of $925.00 to these worthy institutions.

If we can crack 50 novels, we will eclipse $1,250.

Alone, we can do much that is good. Together, the sum of our good works will be great.

As many of you know, each December when I am done talking about my beard, posting quotes, and throwing up drinking and travel pics, I like to donate and inspire my friends, family, and fans to contribute to either the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or All Children's Hospital.

For anyone that makes a donation above $10.00 I will give you free reading material (blurb at end of post).

Here is how I work it out...

$10.00 = free ebook

$25.00 = free paperback

$50.00 = free signed paperback

Make your donation, then email your receipt to nicholasadenmon@gmail.com

These are great causes and you can't go wrong picking either or both organizations to donate to this holiday season. If you have ever spent time with a terminally ill child you know the help that they truly need. So not only will you be getting a novel of questionable value and my eternal gratitude - you will be making a difference in the lives of the smallest of those that need the biggest kinds of help.

I hope I have the opportunity to give away many books, and happy holidays!
A while back, For Nothing came out via the good folks at Cherry Hill Publishing. Bill Murray did the narration of both audio books, and he did a fantastic job. Here is the second book in the series:

Also, they have put together a pretty cool CGI video on YouTube of For Nothing's audio trailer. I love the fedora on the character narrating the story, voiced again by Bill Murray.

What is a nibling you may ask? According to the wiktionary.com it is:

Noun
nibling (plural niblings)
A nephew or niece, especially in the plural or as a gender-neutral term

I hope everyone has had a nice weekend. The 4th of July is right around the corner and that means spending time with family and loved ones, pools, beaches, BBQs and fireworks. It also means that for the Muslim community it is Ramadan and a time to connect with faith, family, and friends as well. I hope everyone has a safe 4th, and I hope that those celebrating Ramadan have a peaceful holy month. The month also contains my mother's birthday, quite possibly and finally, the completion of my third novel, and the launch of yet another business.

Things are looking busy, but it is a good idea to not forget the really important things in life. I was able to take some time out this weekend to hang out with my nieces and nephew, whom I don't get to see nearly as much as I like. To quote Bilbo Baggins, life can often feel thus:

"I don't know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve."

So when I get to see the people that I want to see and whom I don't get to see as often as I like, I try and take in those opportunities.

My weekend was mostly spent in reflection, sitting in multiple swimming pools, visiting family and friends, and couldn't have been more perfect.

Some of my favorite cast of characters from the weekend:

Men's Mag Daily recently interviewed me while I was in London. The magazine bills itself as "Everything A Guy Needs," and is pretty much on the mark. It covers everything from Sports, News, Business, Fashion, Dating, Women, and of course, Entertainment.

For a snapshot of what they like to write about, just under the tagline are the words "women. money. cars. sex. business. sports. music." They pretty much stay true to those topics and really do focus on things men like to read about.

It is pretty neat to get approached for an interview by a magazine that features popular musicians such as Twista (the undisputed King of Chicago), Bubba Sparxxx, and DJ Scream.

Twista: Undisputed King of Chicago

It is even more interesting to be interviewed by a magazine that grabs up interviews from those in the adult entertainment industry as well, with interviews featuring ladies like Brianna Brooks, Kiara Mia, and Alexis Amore.

It is humbling to be labeled "The Savior of Mob Fiction," but it's better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick, so I'll take it!

To be honest, I didn't know what to expect, but Jon DaBove knew his stuff, had done his research, and even written a thesis around the mafia in Cuba. I really enjoyed the interview so here is a snippet:
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Mens Mag Daily: And what was it about the organized crime,
mafia genre that drew you in?

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Nicholas Denmon: I grew up in an
Italian and Irish family in Buffalo and I’m not sure about now but in the
1960’s-1980’s there was a really big organized crime presence in Buffalo. My
grandfather is a Sicilian and my great grandparents were straight
from Palermo. They were kind of brought up around that life and they had their
dabblings in that life. My great grandfather actually at one point worked for
the police and the Mafia in order to make ends meet. It was during the Great
Depression era. He did his best to play both sides of the fence. He would tell
the mob when the busts were going down but he would also tell his partners
where they would be able to find certain illegal activities. He did that until
they came looking for him one day and he had to hide out. He decided that was
too close of a call with a family and everything. It was one of those things
that I just grew up with. I grew up with the stories that surrounded the life
and they say when you’re writing a book you should write what you know.

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Mens Mag Daily: I always enjoy Mafia stories that take place
outside of New York City. I’ve ready so many books on Magaddino in Buffalo, the
New Orleans mob, the Denver mob, and it always really draws me in. Do you think
that your story taking place outside of New York City kind of gave you a leg up
because you had that aspect of originality right off the bat?

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Nicholas Denmon: New York City is
kind of the standard setting for mob stories. But yeah I do think it did, one
of the things I kind of wanted to do with the book was pay tribute to my roots
and the upbringing I had and my family had. You’re right, Buffalo is a unique
place and the thing about the Buffalo crime family is that it’s not just
Buffalo. It’s also Ontario and even extends up to Youngstown, Ohio so they
cover a lot of ground. Buffalo, as a setting is unique and in the winter the
elements can kind of serve as a character as well.

writers achieve more than half a million books sold since March.

The year began with my

I also caught up with
many friends throughout the year, whether that was traveling to the UK a half

would have me in the clear moving into 2014 but three weddings have already
popped up for the next year. I guess I will get to use my airline miles.

Started with two books

but I thank you for your patience. I have two books that are nearing

Heartbreaks of Harlan Halifax will show a different side to my abilities as a

Just posting a quick Movember update for those of you that are interested in our lip sweaters so that we can "change the face of men's health". This has been a fun exercise in hair growth and slightly reminds me of having to take care of an egg in home economics classes way back when:

Getting a group of men to keep their mustaches for thirty days is not as easy as it sounds but, now at nearly three weeks into the flavor-saver fun, finally everyone seems to have fallen nicely in line.

It may have taken threats.

Cajoling may have been needed.

Promises to certain ladies may have been made.

Gifts given.

But the results speak for themselves.

Just take a look at these monuments to masculinity in mustachio form!

Titans of tangled testosterone!

Unfettered follicles of fame! (Don't hate on the Pope in the top left. He has blond hair but it is actually a nice full stache.)
The men have really started to separate themselves from the boys and what a difference a week makes in turning a Movember Hero into a Movember Zero. As this tale of the thistle ticklers gets deeper into lip doily development, I have promised to keep you updated.

This week's hero is No-Man Notheis for standing tall in the face of friends fleeing him just as the action heats up. Nick shares an office with last week's hero, KanYe-Wheezy who shaved a grizzled man growth off of his giant chin. However as the month has heated up and his cheek hugging affectionate friend has inched its way back onto his face, KanYe has found it hard to depart with the familiar fuzz.

KanYe Today:

Before Being Called Out Ashamed of Himself

Nick has gloriously grown this guy over the last 12 days:

It's too bad his compatriot felt compelled to cower beneath the comfort of his forbidden beard.

Meanwhile the rest of the crew has held up to their end of the bargain and as of yet there isn't a welcher among them. K-Swoll even got his license renewal with the stache! If this man doesn't deserve a hero award I don't know who does.

K-Swoll cemented this look for the next 8 years, until his license expires or he conveniently misplaces it. Though let's be honest, no one is trying to deal with the Department of Motor Vehicles unless they absolutely have to...

Mine has developed nicely, and though I am no stranger to facial hair, it has been a while since the stache got to stand alone amongst the stubble of my face. It is enjoying the attention of being conditioned each night, combed, and then rubbed with evaporated milk and silky oils imported from India.

And then there was Tom. Despite a 14 hour trip to London, and a same-day back to Wales (due to vehicular issues) trip, he still managed to make the most of his lip-titan.

A "no-show" mustachio in progress, a man from the depths of Georgia, forgot to send in his photo yesterday. No-Man Notheis rectified the situation today, but did so with a bit of a shot at me since the University of Florida Gators were a bit toothless in their efforts against the Georgia Bulldogs last week.

While I hate to do it...

It was a pretty good shot and so I appease the victor.

The correct term is "Jorts" though. Everyone knows that...at least in Gainesville, GA. Also, we have yet to play Vanderbilt, but as of this post I can say, "At least we haven't lost to Vanderbilt."

Dick.

As you can't really see his pristine face, here is a close up:

Visions of the GA victory dance in his lenses.

And after letting his hair grow about 5 days we end up with:

If and when we get further updates I shall post accordingly. The next mustache update for the bulk of the group will be Monday as I think we all agree that some time is needed to cultivate these staches before we present them to the public again. With the end of the weekend and the welcome to a wonderful and Mo-tastic Monday, we usher in Day Four of the charity event that is all about bringing more awareness to men's health. I promised last week that we would try and assemble pictures of the roster, and though I have a few pictures of the team with the hairless cheeks, some were not timely about getting photos back to me, so I offer unto you, the reader, what I have available.
Well, it's that time of year again; that time where the autumn air is crisp and the promise of winter lingers just beyond the horizon. It is a time when, more than ever, men around the world need their facial hair in order to survive the wickedness of the winter elements.

And of course it is that time of year, where in honor of Movember, (that isn't at typo) men are required to shave their coveted and carefully crafted crumb catchers and cheek cowlicks before embarking on exemplary, entertaining, and new gregarious growths of follicle glory.

While everyone puts the focus on individuals who have to grow their man-staches. I think it is important to note the individuals who have been growing facial hair for near to a year and then need to part ways with their blessed beauties in order to start from scratch.

So with that in mind, let us pay tribute to our fallen facial hair giant.
In a later post I will do a team lineup. Getting pictures from everybody is like herding cats, so for now just enjoy the glorious metamorphosis above or check out our team page and leave a small donation for men's health if you feel so inclined.
Ed Dasso is the author of Past Aghast. He has agreed to do a guest post for those of us at Cat Get Off My Keyboard. I asked him to write a bit about the underlying Post Traumatic Stress Disorder theme prevalent in his novel. As our warriors return home from engagements abroad, and there are sure to be more engagements to come, I felt like it was as good a topic as any when exploring current relevancy within a piece of literature.

His novel is excellent and you can purchase it by clicking the cover above.

Ed says:

“You read about it in the headlines - Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) has been blamed for a number of behavioral health issues for war veterans…” is not only the start of the synopsis of my novel, “Past Aghast”, but also describes how I developed the plot for my first major work of fiction.

As a physician I’ve had plenty of opportunity to see people afflicted with PTSD and see how it can significantly impact their lives. One day I received a call from a long-time friend, who had been deployed to Iraq twice. He told me that he’d just learned that a third deployment colleague of his had suffered from PTSD, returned to the States, and put a gun in his mouth as a way to escape the torment of PTSD.

I decided it was time to put pen to paper.

Even though I strove to make this an entertaining work of fiction, I’d also hoped that the main protagonist, being a veteran afflicted with PTSD, would somehow help to raise interest in veterans who suffer from PTSD. Sometimes these veterans suffer for the rest of their lives. In case you are interested, my blog contains links to articles about how PTSD increases the risk for depression and suicide for veterans.
In creating the plot and characters, I used many actual experiences from my medical career and weaved them into the story. I wanted to create a story that combined the gritty characters like those in Vince Flynn books with the intriguing medical setting story lines found in Tess Gerritsen stories.

I also wanted to portray my female characters in a way that is consistent with my medical experience with many nurse colleagues, so you'll find the women characters in my books to be strong-willed but compassionate. My main character is intended to be someone who is believable; someone who is smart, compassionate...and yet has human flaws.
I feel the main character should portray an example of the old adage, "there are no heroes, just ordinary people who perform heroic acts.”
The book offers some "behind-the-scenes" views of the strange occurrences that can happen in the field of medicine, especially at large, metropolitan medical centers.

Fact is stranger than fiction far more often than most people would believe and many might be surprised at the number of events in my book that are based on an actual experience of mine.
Lastly, this book is a work of fiction and, as in many works of fiction, I've taken a common issue and given it a different life. The character's responses to his affliction of PTSD are not necessarily reflective of current medical knowledge and scientific facts related to PTSD. I do hope, however, that the story may bring some attention to the struggle that many veterans face in dealing with PTSD.

Though I’ve published articles in national healthcare journals, written many "Ask the Doctor" columns and spoken frequently at national healthcare forums, fiction writing is reviving a lost love from earlier periods in my life where I enjoyed writing short fiction stories. In addition to a number of years as a practicing anesthesiologist and critical care specialist who spent many hours in emergency rooms, operating rooms, and intensive care units, I’ve also led teams in designing, creating and deploying population health programs to help people deal with depression related to their poor health.

I hope that you give Past Aghast a look and find embedded in the harsh realities of PTSD an entertaining novel that also makes you look at life with just a bit of a different tinted lens.
Pubshelf has a new client named D.C.J. Wardle who wrote an interesting novel that is a humorous take on one man's ambition and the lengths he will go to to climb up the social ladder. I asked him to come by and share his thoughts on his novel "Trading Vincent Crow" as well as his process when it comes to writing. Before we jump into it, just a friendly reminder for all my Denmonites, on Friday is the cover reveal of Ashes to Ashes, the third novel in the Upstate NY Mafia Tale trilogy.

Now for the main attraction...

The blurb:

“Trading Vincent Crow” is the humorous journey of a young man, desperate to extract himself from the bottom of the heap as he tries to leapfrog his way up the ladder of success, continually trading his life for a new and better one. This means that he has to swap his entire life – the job, the pad, the threads, the girl, every three months to ensure that he is rapidly propelled forward to where he needs to be. His travels from obscurity toward his dream of being slightly less obscure force him to tackle new social challenges, to keep pushing himself upwards, and not to become comfortable with small gains. Of course, that all sounds like a water-tight plan, noble and worthwhile. In reality Vince ambles ill-equipped and with social ineptitude into new and unfamiliar situations where he becomes a bit-part actor in a variety of other peoples’ dramas and plans as they also play out their own selfish aspirations of personal betterment.

D.C.J. Wardle:

The book is written to be fun and entertaining. Of course humour is a very personal thing, so to qualify that statement, it’s primarily written to be fun and entertaining to me. Hopefully readers will also be able share in the enjoyment that I had through the process of writing it. The journey toward self-improvement enables numerous disparate and quirky characters to emerge in to the pathway of Vince, some of whom are sympathetic, some selfish, some are villains, but all provide texture and colour to the world that Vince must negotiate if he is to make something better of his life. The style of writing is quite episodic, and with every change of job or situation the plot is able to spiral in a new direction and maintain pace and interest. The many sub-chapters provide a fantastic space in which to work tangential sub-plots and off-beat observations. It was particularly entertaining as a writer to use this device to deviate from the plot momentarily and provide a vignette for an incidental character. This opportunity seemed to fit well within the style of the book and provided a wealth of openings for comic scenarios.

In comparison to my earlier creative writings, Trading Vincent Crow is something of a departure in terms of style and content. Over the years I’ve developed more confidence in my writing which has enabled me to write not only what I think is entertaining but also put it out there for public scrutiny. I actually started to really enjoy the process of creative writing about fourteen years ago. It was during my first overseas posting, and as a development worker I was posted to a small village in Cameroon, a lone volunteer managing the construction of a water supply project. The village was remote. There was no TV, telephone, or electricity. We did, however, boast a village chief who was the most powerful of all the witches in the region, and the villagers lived in fear of his dark magic. There were ceremonial rituals involving the village elders, a number of unfortunate goats, dancing around the drums in the firelight, and various adventures to different parts of the country. Consequently, for the first time in my life, I had a lot to write about, and began to really enjoy sending letters home about my adventures. I then decided to write a short story about the pop band that I had played in at college. I wrote it on scraps of paper, and found myself cutting out paragraphs from different pages and sticking them at the sides of others with duct-tape. The resulting collage of scribbling needed instructions to negotiate. After discovering the pleasures of this creative process I went on to write longer stories about my adventures in Cameroon and the subsequent places I’ve worked. This led me to get more involved in writing fiction, which has included writing a couple of novels, and a series of children’s books about the environment. My writing about my travels seems to have waned a little in recent years. I think that after so many years of moving between countries for work I am a little less fascinated by the experience compared to my earlier career. However, I’m never quite sure where I will find myself next, and so the prospect for inspiration is never far away.

At the moment, a big challenge is finding the time to write. However, I found that having a full time job actually suited the development of Trading Vincent Crow. This is because having a limitation on my writing time forces me to spend more time thinking about an idea, enjoying it, and letting it evolve and develop long before anything is written down. During my busy week there will be times when plots or situations are brewing away intensely in my head but I have no opportunity to express them. When I do get the chance to put down the narrative, I have scenes that have been rattling around inside and comic lines that I have been rehearsed in my head for so long that I’m ready to feverishly get the whole thing out of my system. This has been great for Vince in achieving the concise style I was aspiring to. It often results in writing where the sub-chapters are not only contributing to the bigger story but also becoming mini-stories in themselves. In taking such a long time to write a book, I feel that it is not rushed or forced, and is richer in its ideas and content as a result. I have very purposely avoided too much descriptive narrative or in-depth development of emotional nuances so that the story bounds onwards like an enthusiastic spaniel, and hopefully it’s not too long before the next wry smile is induced. Usually I will try to sit down each weekend for several hours and expunge the build-up of thoughts that are cluttering my imagination in to my laptop. I have applied the same approach to the sequel to Trading Vincent Crow which I am currently in the process of finalising.
I am pleased to have Joe Conlan who is the author of Nameless, the #1 Amazon Thriller novel in the UK, doing a quick guest post on my site. Joe Conlan and I met through twitter and hit it off quite well instantly as we both enjoy exploring the darker side of human nature through our writing and have several things in common.

For example

We both write about serial killers. Mine exist in the world of the mafia whereas Joe's hang out on hiking trails.

We both have flawed detectives trying to get to the bottom of things.

We are both in sunny Florida, though Joe is a bit north.

We both currently hold #1 rankings on Amazon for our novels.

Italian hitmen count as serial killers right?

I asked Joe to come up with a quick bit about serial killers, but first let me introduce the man, the myth, the legend...

Here is the skinny on Joe Conlan

Joe Conlan was born in Nassau County, Long Island, New York. He has lived most of his life in Florida, the great majority in the Fort Lauderdale area. He received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Florida and practiced law as a trial attorney for 15 years. Three of those years were spent as a prosecutor in the Broward County State Attorney's Office.

He now lives in Jacksonville, Florida. He has two grown children. When he is not writing, he enjoys reading, traveling and spending time with his family and two best friends who happen to be female Rhodesian Ridgebacks.

Here is what Joe Conlan had to say on serial killers

"It was my honor to be asked to write a guest spot about serial killers by my good friend Nick Denmon. Rather than discuss the particular real-life monsters of the past and present, I thought I would write about what it is, exactly, that captivates us fans of stories involving those evil psychopaths. Speaking for myself, I can’t say that I’m absolutely sure. I am the type of person who wouldn’t harm a fly. I do love to hate them. But, is that enough to create a fascination? Some theorize that the media has glorified serial killers, almost making them idols. I can’t say that I idolize Ted Bundy or Jeffrey Dahmer. There probably are some sickos out there that do, but, I don’t think they represent the majority.

Others would say that our interest is heightened by the fact that they are not something we hear about on a daily basis. We don’t hear about the aegus platyodon leopoldi, an extremely rare insect, either. I don’t know about you, but I couldn’t care less about them. In the end, perhaps it’s just that paradoxical and compelling attraction we have to stare at something that grosses us out to no end, but we can’t turn our eyes away."

The Book Blurb

Chilling and taut, NAMELESS, introduces a fresh and exciting twist on the deadly game of cat and mouse. FBI Special Agent in Charge Daniel Falcone unwittingly steps onto course for a head-on collision with a frighteningly brilliant psychotic serial killer, whose harrowing childhood abuse and neglect left him devoid of humanity and salivating for revenge.

My mom keeps a collection of dolls in her house. They are a bit creepy when you enter the doll room alone. Something about their painted features makes me feel uncomfortable.

And I am not alone.

I wonder how many other people out there find them to be unsettling.

Consider my sample size...

My little brother hates them. I once surrounded his bed with them and the result was a tearful child.

My buddy and I were talking about them and he agreed they are creepy. He said his grandma has hundreds of them. I told him their unblinking eyes bother me...

I thought about it...

And thought that if they blinked it would be worse. He agreed.

So three people spring to mind immediately. If I thought about it a bit or asked around I bet I could find even more.

Here is a photo of the creepy porcelain doll that looks down at me every time I change my clothes or sleep in my mother's guest room.

In under two weeks I met two of my nieces for the first time. The first was Milana Iris Denmon, courtesy of my brother who lives in Arizona. He sent his lady to us on a fact finding mission and as an offering, she brought forth the first born child of their union.

We found her offering to the Denmon Elders to be acceptable.

She isn't picking her nose...just chewing a few fingers.

She is adorable and very mild mannered. Her eyes are absorbing life and she refuses to blink until she gets as much in as possible.

I think she is practicing hypnosis...

And just when I thought they didn't make babies any smaller...

On July 3rd my older brother decided to convince his lady to catapult a child into the world as well.

And along came Danica Denmon...

At about two hours old...quite content immediately.

Since I have done Danica a disservice by showing off the little lady before she had her makeup on, here is another with her a bit more prepared for the Paparazzi ...
